Case Study:
Polyglot is a new language learning app for those who aspire to read in a new language. Polyglot strives to give their users all the information needed to easily and efficiently read – and perhaps speak – fluently in multiple languages. Polyglot’s target customers are those who love learning and aspire to be bilingual or multilingual.
I used Eve Gregory’s “Learning to Read in a New Language”’ to develop interview questions, which were later used to conduct user interviews. Most users that were interviewed reported wanting to learn a new language, but they always found it difficult to find a structure that would be useful in the real world. The feedback received through research made it clear that users are open to learning a new language to interact correctly with readings and people if they had a well-built guide to help them.
I looked for multiple competing language learning apps with some of the features I created. I found two that apps that competed directly. Polyglot is designed for users to see the courses all the way through in hopes to use the learned language comfortably.
While analyzing the features of the competitors' applications, I found that:
– No Text-to-Speech feature
– Everyone starts from the basics
– No dialect taken into consideration
Users shared that the app made learning a new language, and understanding context while reading, easy to follow.
One quote from peer feedback:
“It is great to see all the different countries listed because it shows how there are different dialects to languages.”
While designing the Polyglot app, I learned that even though the problem I was trying to solve was a big one, going through all the steps of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me produce solutions that were useful and accessible.
